Pétrus

Pétrus, a small estate in Pomerol, Bordeaux, is known for a single Merlot-based wine that ranks among the most sought-after reds. Annual production is modest, typically around 2,500 to 3,000 cases, which helps drive strong demand.

The wine regularly commands very high prices on release and at auction and has long held a reputation for depth, longevity, and refinement.

What is Pétrus?

Pétrus is a single-wine estate centered on Merlot. Its 11.5-hectare vineyard lies on the crest of the Pomerol plateau over smectite-rich blue clay, a water-retentive soil that shapes the wine's depth and firm structure. While a small share of Cabernet Franc appeared in some past vintages, the vineyard has been exclusively Merlot since the remaining Cabernet Franc vines were uprooted at the end of the 2010 harvest.

The style is noted for supple texture, layered black-fruit and truffle notes, and the capacity to age. Many vintages show best after 10 to 15 years and the finest can evolve for 20 to 50 years.

FAQs

Why is Pétrus considered so special?

Small production, a singular blue-clay terroir, and a long record of quality and longevity combine to make it highly coveted among collectors and enthusiasts.

Where is Pétrus located?

Pétrus is located in Pomerol, Bordeaux, France.

What is unique about the Pétrus vineyard's location?

The vines sit on elevated, smectite-rich blue clay on the Pomerol plateau. This dense, water-retentive soil helps produce wines with deep flavor, fine-grained tannins, and notable structure, qualities that particularly suit Merlot.

How large is the Pétrus vineyard?

The estate encompasses 11.5 hectares, approximately 28 acres.

How is Pétrus different from other Bordeaux wines?

Unlike many Bordeaux blends, Pétrus has been 100% Merlot since 2011, following the removal of its last Cabernet Franc vines in late 2010. Small amounts of Cabernet Franc were used only intermittently in earlier decades.

Does Pétrus produce different types of wine?

No. Pétrus produces a single wine each year and does not release a second label.

Who owns Pétrus?

The Moueix family are the majority owners. In 2018 they sold a 20% minority stake to Alejandro Santo Domingo while retaining management of the estate.

Who is the winemaker at Pétrus?

Olivier Berrouet has crafted Pétrus since 2008.

Were there any vintages not produced?

Yes. No Pétrus was produced in 1956 due to severe frost.

Has Pétrus set any notable sales records or valuations?

The 2018 minority stake sale drew significant attention, though terms were not disclosed. At auction, top vintages often achieve some of the highest prices in Bordeaux.
